BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet

If you have a key research interest in development of hydrogels for a clinical relevant purpose, then this might be the right PhD position for you.

The aim of the PhD project is to develop in situ  hydrogels for nasal delivery with the purpose of targeting bacterial biofilm in the sinuses. Your focus will be on i) developing in situ  hydrogels encapsulating antibiotic(s), ii) to in vitro characterize the developed gels and ensure they can deposit in the sinuses and iii) to explore any toxicological and sensory effects of the hydrogels in vitro and ex vivo.

The PhD candidate will be a part of the Pharmaceutical Technology group (see more information on the homepage). In the group, we are exploring and developing targeted and advanced drug delivery systems to be able to e.g. deliver vaccines and peptides/proteins by the oral, buccal and nasal routes. The ultimate goals of these activities are to enhance the systemic uptake to prevent and/or cure diseases or to have a targeted release of drug in specific locations in the body. The group is part of the Drug Delivery and Sensing (IDUN) section at DTU Department of Health Technology. The IDUN section is highly cross-disciplinary with more than 40 members focusing on development of micro and nanotechnology based sensors, detection systems and drug delivery systems.

Research field
You will primarily be working on development and testing of in situ  hydrogels. In the development phase, there will be a main focus on polymer selection for the gels and on obtaining a sustained release of the antibiotics from the gels. During development, the gels are characterized for example for its mechanical parameters and viscoelastic behaviours and further, it needs to be tested if there are unwanted toxicological and sensory effects.

The project is part of a Sapere Aude grant from Independent Research Fund Denmark. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with colleagues from the Pharmaceutical Technology group and from the IDUN section.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will be responsible for material selection, development of the hydrogels for sinus deposition and characterization of the gels.

You are expected to have a background in areas related to pharmaceutical sciences/technology, chemistry or material sciences.

You are highly independent, self-motivated and enjoy collaboration in a multidisciplinary academic environment. You have the ability to drive the project forward and to set and achieve ambitious goals.

You enjoy supervising and teaching BSc and MSc students.

The project is highly interdisciplinary and we expect that you enjoy teamwork and are good at coordinating your work with your colleagues.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
