BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet
Are you a highly competent, ambitious, and hard-working scientist wanting to excel in the exciting field of gas fermentation in one of the best foundations and collaboration schemes to accomplish this? Then this position is for you.
At DTU Chemical Engineering, a PhD position is available in the frame of a research project funded by DTU as a strategic PhD. The project is in close collaboration with DTU Construct (Associate Professor Lasse Røngaard Clausen), and Stiesdal SkyClean A/S (Chief Engineer Dr. Jesper Ahrenfeldt) and the main task will be to optimize biomethanation of pyrolysis gas from laboratory to pilot scale including process digitalization and sustainability.
Responsibilities and tasks
Your overall focus will be to contribute to strengthening the department’s competences within gas fermentation technology. You will work with nearby colleagues and academic partners in Denmark as well as abroad. Your primary tasks will be:
- Setting-up gas fermentation systems at lab and pilot scale.
- Cultivating, enriching and adapting mixed microbial consortia on pyrolysis gas.
- Optimizing methane productivity based on pyrolysis gas composition.
- Developing a process digital twin, that will combine reactor hydraulics, biofilm development and mass transfer phenomena with an already developed biological model for CO2, CO and H2 biomethanation.
- Performing sustainability and technoeconomic analysis of combined pyrolysis and biomethanation plants.
- Being a teaching assistant in BSc and MSc courses and co-supervising BSc and MSc student projects.
Qualifications
In accordance with the abovementioned, you should have qualifications within several of the following areas:
- Handling of pure and mixed microbial cultures under anaerobic conditions.
- Operating bioreactors in batch and/or continuous mode with suspended and/or attached growth (biofilm).
- Experience in gas fermentation.
- Experience in modeling biological processes.
- Experience in use of process simulation tools such as Matlab, Aquasim, Superpro Designer, Aspen or similar.
Expertise within fermentation technology and/or gas fermentation should be documented with the Master/Bachelor thesis and/or relevant publications in international journals.
The project and co-supervision of the PhD student will be in close collaboration with personnel enrolled at DTU Chemical Engineering. Availability for a highly active period, openness, and willingness for a fruitful collaboration is a prerequisite. Ideally, you should be available to start the PhD project in Autumn 2024.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education
