BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet
This PhD project is part of EU ITN (International Training Network) project MicroCombSys, which focuses on generating optical frequency combs using microring-resonators.
Broadband frequency combs are critical tools for applications such as high-precision spectroscopy, metrology, and telecommunication. Nonlinear materials exhibiting both χ(2) and χ(3) effects offer a unique advantage to materialize critical nonlinear components like microcombs and frequency doublers in the same platform, which simplifies the co-integration of nonlinear components made from different materials. SiC is such an emerging platform for integrated nonlinear photonics. Moreover, electro-optic modulation has also been demonstrated in this platform since SiC is a non-centrosymmetric crystal.
Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD candidate will combine both χ(2) and χ(3) effects in a single microresonator, where Kerr frequency comb generation and second harmonic generation will be simultaneously realized while the electro-optic effect can be utilized for tunability function. The developed broadband comb sources will be implemented in a high-speed communication system and 3D imaging system.
The primary tasks will be:
- Theoretical investigation of the second harmonic generation in microresonators;
- Dispersion engineering design for broadband Kerr comb generation beyond one octave;
- Modeling for comb generation dynamics incorporating different nonlinear effects.
- Fabrication of high-Q SiC microresonators;
- Fabrication of tunable microresonators using electro-optic effects;
- Hybrid-integration of on-chip laser together with University of Gent;
- Characterization of microcombs in high-speed communication system at DTU;
- Implementation of microcomb in 3D imaging system at Max-Planck-Institute;
The majority of the fabrication work will be performed in the DTU Nanolab cleanroom, while there will also be joint efforts from the University of Gent on integrating pump light source and microcombs.
