The Danish sector is evolving towards more centralized strategies for wastewater management ensuring savings in infrastructure. However, it remains unclear what are the impacts of heavy centralization on the environment and society. Furthermore, centralization may encompass heavy costs on maintenance of infrastructure (e.g., maintenance of sewer systems). The project will assess a new membrane-based technology for wastewater treatment at the household level. The candidate will support the process optimization at pilot scale and support the implementation and evaluation of field-testing facilities. Effluent quality will be assessed as alternative water source for non-potable use, while the concentrate will be assessed as feedstock for anaerobic digestion. The collected data will serve as a life cycle inventory for the application of life cycle tools to assess in which scenarios is relevant to decentralize wastewater treatment using membrane technology. The PhD is partly funded by a PhD alliance grant between DTU and IIT-Bombay, where the student is expected to conduct the external stay.
Responsibilities and qualifications
We seek a PhD candidate who has a strong background on water treatment and sustainability assessment. Having experience experimental work at lab and pilot scale (running membrane processes or fermenters) or life cycle assessment is an advantage. You are highly motivated and self-driven in what you do. You like getting your hands dirty and therefore are capable to understand analytical and experimental techniques, showing high degree of independence. You like to synthesize empirical knowledge into mathematical models that can describe the main material and energy flows of the technological solution and its interaction with the surrounding system. You enjoy working in an interdisciplinary environment and are unafraid to ask questions. You enjoy working and communicating your results with a wide group of stakeholders (e.g., engineering companies, municipalities, etc.).
As a PhD student in this project you will engage in:
(a) pilot and field scale testing of forward osmosis for wastewater treatment
(b) laboratory work to optimize co-digestion of septic and activated sludge under high salinity
(c) life cycle assessment, costing and social-LCA
(d) close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team
(e) research and teaching efforts at a section and departmental level as appropriate and relevant
(f) dissemination of your research through publications and attendance to conferences
(g) teaching and supervision activities within the field of biological water treatment
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education
