The Department of Technology, Management and Economics at Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in Healthcare Scheduling, starting in January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position is part of a joint research project between DTU Management and Region Zealand. The PhD student will be part of the Management Science Division at DTU Management. The position is affiliated to the Operations & Supply Chain Management Section.
The PhD project aims at analyzing and solving real-world decision problems in healthcare with advanced methodology. The methods from Operations Research and Management Science are very suitable to study various decision problems and allow making sound decisions in healthcare delivery. The focus of the PhD project will be on operating room planning and/or on emergency department optimization.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be strengthening the department’s competencies in modelling and optimizing healthcare-related decision problems. You will work hand in hand with academics and healthcare professionals. As a PhD student, you will:
- Be responsible for conducting your own research project
- Contribute to new knowledge about analytics in healthcare
- Strive to publish your work worldwide in recognised journals
- Work in close collaboration with Region Zealand including regular in-person meetings (e.g., at Slagelse or Køge)
- Collaborate with researchers from the Management Science Division
- Present your work at international conferences and seminars
- Teach and supervise engineering students
The PhD project will be supervised by Professor Jens O. Brunner and the candidates for the PhD position will be assessed on the following criteria:
- Profound knowledge in Operations Research and Management Science
- Knowledge in and practical experiences with programming (e.g., Python, Java, Julia, etc.)
- Basic knowledge in healthcare operations management
It is an advantage if you speak/understand the Danish language.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
The period of employment is 3 years. Starting date is preferably 1 January 2024, or as soon as the positions are filled. The position are a full-time position.
