This PhD project is part of EU ITN (International Training Network) project MicroCombSys, which focuses on generating optical frequency combs using microring-resonators.
The goal of this PhD project is to investigate optical frequency combs for data transmission using both spatial- and wavelength multiplexing. In this project the successful candidate will combine microcomb technologies developed by the partners in order to advance the international state-of-the-art within optical communications. The project is centered on understanding frequency comb sources and testing their fundamental limits in the context of data transmission to arrive at energy- and spectrally efficient communication systems.
Responsibilities and qualifications
The main purpose of this PhD project is to investigate the achievable data transmission rates using frequency comb sources. This will include careful noise investigations of the sources themselves and various schemes for sharing and amplifying the light from a single comb. Schemes for stable generation and operation of soliton-based frequency combs shoud be developed and validated.
The primary tasks will be:
- Theoretical investigation of achievable data transmission rates using a single frequency comb source.
- Develop and implement schemes for stable and reliable generation and operation of micro-resonator frequency comb sources.
- Characterization of noise properties of the sources and amplification schemes for sharing a single source between many spatial channels, including optimum positioning of amplifiers in a transmitter.
- Realize massively multiplexed optical transmission system based on a single source.
The candidate should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points), or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree, in physics, optical or electrical engineering or similar. The qualifications of the candidate would preferably include experience with communication systems and metrics, nonlinear optics and/or integrated photonics. Experimental skills are appreciated, but can be learned.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education
.
