If you are in the process of establishing your career as a scientist and are seeking the optimal foundation to realize your dreams and ambitions, your search ends here. At DTU Electro, you will pioneer advancements at the forefront of silicon carbide nanophotonics and quantum photonics. We are actively seeking a highly self-motivated PhD candidate to make significant contributions to our ongoing research endeavors. This PhD position will be situated within the wide bandgap semiconductor photonics group, under the leadership of Associate Professor Haiyan Ou.
Silicon carbide on insulator (SiCOI) is swiftly emerging as a pivotal material platform for photonic integrated circuits (PIC) and quantum photonic integrated circuits (QPIC), owing to its exceptional optical properties—ranging from high second-order and third-order nonlinearity to optically addressable color centers. As pioneers in this burgeoning field, we eagerly anticipate collaborating with you to further advance this captivating domain.
Responsibilities and qualifications
You will take part in the newly granted DFF research project ‘Silicon carbide based quantum photonic integrated circuit (SiC-Q-PIC)’ , whose goal is to achieve scalable single photon sources with high efficiency, purity and indistinguishability by combining room-temperature stable color centers in SiC optical micro-cavity working in the telecom wavelength range with high Q/V and tunable optical cavities.
The candidate is thus expected to:
- Design the SiCOI based high Q/V optical micro-cavities
- Optimize SiCOI stack formation process to achieve low-loss devices fabrication ready stacks
- Optimize the fabrication process to achieve low-loss waveguides and high quality factor optical micro-cavities
- Investigate the different mechanisms to tune the optical micro-cavities
- Build the experimental setup to characterize the tunability of optical micro-cavities
- Integrate color centers in optical micro-cavities
- Explore the performance of the optical devices at low temperature and low input power
- Be a good team player
In the selection of candidates, special consideration will be given to candidates with experience within one or several of the following topics:
- Nanofabrication or nanoscale materials characterization
- Experimental or theoretical photonics
- Quantum optics, nanophotonics, or semiconductor physics
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education
.
Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate Professor Haiyan Ou together with supervisor team.
