Natural products play a tremendous role in our everyday life. They are the source of many essential drugs, but also have many other applications ranging from bio-derived colors, food preservatives, aromas and important applications in agriculture. At DTU Biosustain we are creating software tools that assist researchers worldwide in the discovery of new Natural Products. The expert systems we use at the moment are great for discovering new synthesis pathways, but predicting a product’s structure and bioactivity remains a challenge.

Can we push the envelope using modern Machine Learning / AI technologies like Transformers and Diffusion models?
To answer that question, we are collaborating with Associate Professor Jes Frellsen from  DTU Compute to apply bleeding edge ML/AI approaches to the multi-omics datasets produced in our group.

Could you be our next PhD student helping us to tackle our ambitious goal?
We are searching for a highly motivated and skilled PhD student to join our “Natural Product Genome Mining Bioinformatids” team, supervised by Senior Researcher Kai Blin (DTU Biosustain):

Responsibility and tasks

  • Designing, implementing, and testing novel ML/AI approaches for natural product structure and bioactivity predictions.
  • Studying the available literature in the field and formulating own scientific hypotheses and questions.
  • Writing peer-reviewed scientific publications.
  • Completing courses and training required for being awarded the PhD degree.
  • Collecting and curating training datasets for said ML/AI methods.

Specific qualifications we are looking for:

  • Excellent knowledge and practical experience on current ML/AI methods.
  • Excellent knowledge in natural product biosynthesis.
  • Experience in genome mining approaches is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated oral and written English skills.
  • You are a team player enjoying working in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment and interacting with peers within DTU Biosustain and partners.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain)
Recent progress in our ability to read and write genomic code, combined with advances in automation, analytics and data science, has fundamentally changed the scope and ambition of harnessing the potential of biological systems. Big data approaches and analysis of biological systems are key research instruments at the Center. DTU Biosustain utilizes these advances for microbial cell factory design to foster sustainable lifestyles in relation to three application areas: Sustainable Chemicals, Natural Products, and Microbial Foods.

Technology for people
DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today. DTU has 13,500 students and 6,000 employees. We work in an international atmosphere and have an inclusive, evolving, and informal working environment.
