This position is for you if you are motivated by research on the interface with industrial partners and you are fascinated by experimental material characterization and thermodynamic modeling. You will have the chance to provide new insights into resource optimization by combining cutting-edge methods in a multidisciplinary and international research environment through a doctoral training network entitled "Valorization of CO2 for low carbon cement (CO2Valorize)”, funded by the Marie Skolodowska-Curie Action of the European Commission. The complete program consists of eight international Ph.D. projects that perform research projects to identify technological solutions that help reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the cement industry significantly.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The successful candidate will work on new protocols for the characterization of potential raw materials, carbonated components, and cementitious hydration products. The specific objectives are:

  1. To develop protocols for the optimization of enhanced carbonation of raw materials towards their performance in cementitious systems.
  2. To improve our understanding of the reactions and performance of enhanced carbonated materials when used in cementitious systems.

The project consists of two employment periods. The first period of the project will be conducted at the company HZDR Innovation in Germany, followed by the second period at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate who is passionate about understanding cement production, techniques to evaluate cement quality, and sustainable solutions for the cement industry such as carbonation. The project will involve material characterization (mineralogy and performance tests), as well as the characterization of hydration kinetics.

Previous experience with some of the following topics will be highly appreciated:

  • Supplementary Cementitious Materials,
  • Thermodynamic modeling including hydration kinetics,
  • Recycled Concrete Aggregates,
  • Recycled Concrete Fines,
  • Mine tailings,
  • Mineral carbonation & Carbon sequestration

Engineers with a Master in Civil Engineering, Geology, Chemical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, as well as individuals with a science background in physics or chemistry with a main interest in the future of cement production, are encouraged to apply.

We welcome applications from PhD candidates from any country fulfilling the following criteria:

Eligible candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before their recruitment by the host institution (i.e. the starting date indicated in the employment contract/equivalent direct contract).

Candidates must have a high proficiency in written and spoken English, which will be assessed with interviews.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The period of employment is 3 years with a preferred start date of 1.3.2024 or shortly after.
