We are looking to recruit 3 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) as part of PROSAFE MSCA doctoral training network. The recruited DCs will have the opportunity to work as part of an international team of 12 doctoral candidates based at universities and companies throughout Europe. DCs will have multiple opportunities to participate in professional and personal development training and undertake research within multidisciplinary fields of AI/ML and PSE for safe and efficient process operations.

This position is fully funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie European Training Network „PROSAFE“, which aims to train a cohort of 12 doctoral students in the domain of application of machine learning/AI, and process systems engineering to advance foundations of process safety.

If you are establishing your career as a young professional in process systems engineering and machine learning/AI and looking for expanding your professional network in process industries studying safe transition to renewable and sustainable process industries, here you have a unique opportunity.

Be part of PROSAFE doctoral training network and establish a great foundation for pursuing your dreams and ambitions. At DTU Chemical Engineering you will break new ground at the forefront of what is possible with deploying process systems engineering and emerging machine learning/AI paradigm for ensuring safer and sustainable process operations.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The recruited researchers will undertake research across interdisciplinary topics namely: (1) Develop AI and ML (interpretable ML) models using domain knowledge for efficient, safe, and reliable operations. (2)  Develop synergistic integration of model-based with data-based methods for improved process safety operation and monitoring and (3) Demonstration and validation of these new concepts and methods on industrial relevant case studies for safe process operations. Case studies will be drawn from urea processing, hydrogen production and liquefaction, and low carbon/renewable fuels production.

In particular we are looking to recruit on the following positions offered as part of PROSAFE doctoral training program:

  • DC01-DTU: Advanced sensitivity analysis and comprehensive validation methodology to improve credibility of QRAs studies in chemical process industries
  • DC02-DTU: Hybrid approaches for smart integration of AI/deep learning with model-based algorithms for online risk monitoring
  • DC04-DTU:  Statistical machine learning and big data analytics for online risk monitoring and fault diagnosis

Qualifications

  • A two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
  • An MSc degree in the following subject areas: chemical engineering, process engineering, mechanical/civil engineering, or equivalent
  • Domain knowledge (for example thesis) in process systems engineering applied to modelling & simulation, process design, process control/monitoring or process optimization
  • Experience with equation/object-oriented programming (this is an asset but not a requirement): Process simulation (Aveva Process Simulation, ASPEN Tech, INOSIM), Optimization (GAMS,  PYOMO), Programming (Python, Julia, Matlab or similar)
  • Curious and an appetite for developing AI/ML competences
  • Curious and an appetite for solving complex problems applying a systems approach
  • In accordance with the European Union’s funding rules for doctoral networks, applicants must NOT yet have a PhD & The applicant must not have resided or carried out her/his main activity (work, studies etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the past 3 years.

Applicable for all scholarships

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .

Assessment
The assessment of the applicant will be made by Senior Researcher Merlin Alvarado-Morales and Prof. Gürkan Sin.

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.
