Are you passionate about developing environmentally friendly solutions for the coatings industry? Do you have a master’s degree in chemistry and/or chemical engineering, an interest in supporting the further development of sustainable solutions based on a scientific foundation – and perhaps some knowledge of organic coatings or a related field? Do you want to join a world-class research team at the Hempel Foundation Coatings Science and Technology Centre (CoaST) at DTU and have an influence on future research projects?
If yes, then you might be the PhD student we are looking for!
About CoaST and the project
CoaST is a world-class research center with a focus on the development, production and use of high-performance organic coatings. Our mission is to create innovative and sustainable coating solutions.
The challenge we face is that we don’t precisely know the level of sustainability performance we achieve in our projects. We need to ensure that our research aims are genuinely more environmentally sustainable compared to our current practices.
Therefore, we are actively seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD student to join our research team in the field of protective coatings and sustainability. The primary focus of the project is to develop a simple yet effective method to screen new research projects within the field of protective coatings. This method will cover all aspects from cradle to grave, allowing us to predict the potential environmental sustainability. A positive assessment will be a prerequisite for initiating any new project.
As a PhD student, you will be part of a multidisciplinary research team and collaborate with industry partners and experts
Your main tasks will be to:
- Conduct literature reviews to understand the current landscape of protective coatings and sustainability in the industry
- Design and develop a screening method for evaluating the sustainability of new research projects in protective coatings
- Gather insights and validate the proposed screening method with relevant stakeholders
- Analyze and interpret experimental data, draw conclusions and make recommendations for further research or implementation
- Contribute to the preparation of research publications and presentations at conferences
To be considered for this position, you should have:
- A master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, sustainability or a related field
- Experience with Life Cycle Assessments or a willingness to learn
- A background or interest in coatings
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Enthusiasm for sustainability and a passion for contributing to environmentally friendly solutions
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education
